AENL Chemical Plant – Amsterdam
Demolition phasing design, steel hall development, and structural engineering in an active industrial environment
The AENL chemical plant in Amsterdam is a highly sensitive intervention within an operating industrial site, where the existing technological environment was modified and expanded while continuous production remained in operation. The project is distinguished by the fact that the design scope focused not on a greenfield development, but on an active industrial facility undergoing partial demolition.
The objective of the investment was the controlled demolition of an existing hall section and the construction of a new, modern steel hall on the freed-up area, under strict safety and operational constraints. A key requirement throughout the process was ensuring the continuous protection and operational safety of the remaining building parts.

One of the most critical elements of the project was the engineering definition of the demolition sequence, ensuring that industrial operations could continue uninterrupted during construction activities.
To separate the retained and demolished areas, a temporary steel wall system was designed, ensuring a physical and operational enclosure of the working industrial space throughout the entire construction period.
Following demolition, a new steel hall of approximately 7,000 m² was designed, meeting the requirements of modern chemical industry facilities.
During the design process, special attention was given to the specific load, safety, and operational requirements arising from the chemical industry environment, as well as integration with the existing infrastructure.
One of the major engineering challenges was that demolition and reconstruction phases took place simultaneously within an operating industrial environment. This required continuous coordination between structural design, construction, and facility operations.
