International design adaptation and engineering knowledge transfer in a large-scale European industrial investment
The BYD factory in Szeged BYD Company is one of the most significant automotive industry investments in Europe, supporting the expansion of the company’s electric vehicle production capacity on the continent. The project is of major importance for Hungary as well, as it establishes a completely new industrial manufacturing base built on the most advanced automated and sustainable production technologies.
A defining characteristic of the development is its highly intensive international collaboration: the design basis is provided by Chinese engineering concepts and fabrication designs, which must be adapted to European and Hungarian regulatory, technical, and construction frameworks. This process is not a simple design conversion, but a complex engineering localization and knowledge transfer effort, ensuring alignment between different engineering cultures.

In this project, bim.GROUP participated as part of an international engineering consortium, alongside TECTON, ANG, VENTOR, GÉM, and ATREA. The joint task was to create an integrated engineering framework capable of validating Chinese design systems according to European and Hungarian standards, supporting permitting processes, and preparing the design for construction.
