Structural steel engineering design for a modern, multifunctional stadium
The Groupama Aréna is one of Budapest’s most important sports and event facilities, serving as the home of Ferencvárosi TC and hosting international matches as well as large-scale events. The realization of the building aimed to create a modern stadium compliant with UEFA requirements, capable of delivering a high-level sporting experience while providing a complex supporting infrastructure. One of the most important architectural and structural elements of the stadium is the roof structure and its associated steel frame system. This system defines the character of the arena while spanning large distances, covering the stands, and enabling the integration of various technical and service systems.

In the project, bim.GROUP was responsible for the structural steel engineering design tasks, with particular focus on the stadium’s main steel elements and their connection details. The design process emphasized the structural optimization of long-span systems, manufacturability considerations, and the development of an assembly logic aligned with construction requirements.
The stadium’s structural system is based on a complex integrated approach, where the roof structure, the steel and reinforced concrete elements serving the stands, and auxiliary structures function as a unified, high-precision engineering system. During the design process, geometric alignment and coordination of construction phases were especially critical, given the tight deadlines and the scale of on-site assembly operations.
Today, the Groupama Arena is one of Budapest’s key sports venues, not only from a functional perspective but also as a defining element of the cityscape. It serves as a strong example of the intersection between modern stadium architecture and engineering precision.
