Engineering precision along one of Budapest’s most important transport routes
The renovation of Budapest’s M3 metro line was one of the city’s most significant transport infrastructure projects of the past decade. It affected a route that connects residential districts, workplaces, public institutions and major interchange points every day. Its importance therefore extended far beyond the visual renewal of the stations. The reliable operation of the metro has a direct impact on the city’s daily life and economy. It supports predictable commuting, reduces pressure on surface transport and creates a fast connection between the northern, central and south-eastern parts of Budapest.

Renovation beneath an active city
One of the project’s main challenges was the need to introduce modern systems within existing underground spaces and fixed structural conditions. The different geometries of the stations, restricted installation areas and the dense network of architectural and technological elements required an exceptionally high level of design accuracy. The reconstruction renewed not only the technical infrastructure, but also the passenger areas. Durable metal cladding systems designed for intensive daily use became an important part of the new station interiors.
The role of bim.GROUP
Bim.GROUP was responsible for the comprehensive design of the metal cladding and its supporting substructures. The core task was to transform the architectural concepts into technically reliable systems that could be manufactured accurately and installed safely. The design scope extended beyond the visible cladding panels. It also included the supporting frames, fixing points, connections and project-specific details behind the finished surfaces. Each element had to fit the existing station structures while accommodating mechanical services and other technological systems. bim.GROUP worked closely with the manufacturing and construction teams throughout the process. This cooperation was essential because the solutions had to meet structural requirements while remaining economical to produce and practical to install within restricted underground work areas.
A consistent system for individual stations
The design process had to balance repeatable solutions with the unique conditions of each station. Modular elements supported efficient manufacturing and faster installation, while the system still needed to respond to different geometries, panel layouts and architectural concepts. Durability and maintenance were equally important considerations. The cladding had to preserve its quality under intensive passenger use and provide access to the technical systems located behind it when required.
Visible architecture supported by hidden engineering
Passengers primarily experience the colours, surfaces and spatial character of the renewed stations. Behind these visible elements, however, carefully coordinated supporting and fixing structures ensure stability and long-term performance. The project demonstrates that architectural quality and technical reliability cannot be separated in a major urban transport environment. Cladding can only create a precise and consistent appearance when it is supported by a well-designed, manufacturable and installable structural system. The bim.GROUP’s role was to establish this connection between architectural intention and physical implementation.
An award-winning urban renewal project
The project received the Construction Industry Award of Excellence, recognising the technical quality, complexity and city-wide importance of the renovation. Today, the renewed M3 metro provides passengers with a more modern and coherent environment. bim.GROUP’s contribution can be seen both in the accuracy of the finished surfaces and in the engineering details concealed behind the cladding.
