It seems that bim.GROUP’s interns are collecting one recognition after another. This time, Dumitrascu Darius achieved success in the Steel Lion competition organised by Consteel, one of our Group’s strategic partners. The competition has enjoyed growing recognition for several years.

The Consteel Steel Lion Award was established primarily to provide users of the Consteel software with an opportunity to compete with their steel building design projects. The competition is not limited to large-scale, real-world projects: students may also enter their theses and compete in a dedicated category. The thesis competition encourages students to challenge themselves while creating something truly innovative.

For his thesis, Darius designed a 52-metre-high steel-framed office building inspired by London’s iconic Gherkin. The London landmark is based on a distinctive structural system known as a diagrid, which is used so rarely that Darius had not encountered it during his university studies. This was one of the main reasons he wanted to challenge himself, acquire new knowledge and model a structure based on the Gherkin. The most significant innovation in his work was the use of parametric design, an area in which he wanted to develop a deeper understanding.

“To be honest, I initially had no intention of entering the competition. However, thanks to the supportive environment and, more specifically, the encouragement of Lewandowski Dávid from bim.GROUP and Kiss Ádám from Consteel Solutions, I eventually submitted my work. It seems they were right to recognise its potential,” Darius explained regarding the circumstances of his entry.

“I should add that I developed my thesis independently, with the guidance of my university lecturers, as I was not yet part of the company when I worked on the project,” he continued.

“The subject became extremely important to me because it allowed me to develop significantly in both parametric modelling and structural design. I took on a truly complex task, and I feel that I succeeded in completing it. This award means a great deal to me, and it is an exceptional feeling to receive such positive feedback from the profession. It has also given me greater confidence, and I hope it will contribute to a successful career in civil engineering,” Darius concluded.
