Krisztián Király, a colleague at bim.GROUP, delivered another series of presentations, this time at the Sustainability Roadshow organised by the Hungarian Chamber of Engineers in Kakasd and Kecskemét. Krisztián presented current initiatives in sustainable construction and the latest findings of his PhD research, conducted in collaboration with KÉSZ Group, bim.GROUP Kft. and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to an audience of architects, building services design engineers and structural engineers.

During his presentation, Krisztián highlighted the importance of sustainable construction and outlined current international trends and initiatives. He also presented real-world examples of demountable structures that align effectively with the principles of the circular economy, as they can be easily assembled, dismantled, transported and rebuilt at another location with minimal energy and labour.

He also explained why determining and limiting the embodied carbon of load-bearing structures is important as a measure of sustainability.

As part of his doctoral research, Király Krisztián is developing a demountable steel–concrete composite structural system based on the principles presented. The first push-out testing programme was completed in spring 2023, while the next large-scale beam testing programme is scheduled for this summer.

Both his sustainability reviews and research findings have been published on several occasions in Hungarian and international scientific journals and presented at professional conferences.

He concluded his presentation by emphasising that, in addition to economic and political measures, sustainable construction requires appropriate engineering solutions that meet sustainability objectives—and that developing these solutions is the responsibility of the engineering profession.
