Király Krisztián, structural designer at bim.GROUP Kft., won a special award at the world-renowned 10th Eurosteel Conference in Amsterdam with his PhD research entitled "Sustainable composite floor and frame structure - structural behaviour and design", prepared in cooperation between KÉSZ Group and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Among the papers submitted to the conference, outstanding publications were awarded in four categories. Király Krisztián won the special award in the category "New Technologies for Design and Fabrication".

The popular conference attracted 450 presenters across 19 topics. One of this year's outstanding themes was sustainability in construction, the recycling of construction materials and, above all, the reuse of existing structural elements, with special emphasis on the design of demountable structures.

To achieve carbon neutrality, the most effective solution is the use of demountable structures that fit properly into the circular economy model - that is, adapting load-bearing structures that, at the end of a building's life cycle, can be intentionally dismantled without damage, transported and re-erected at a new location according to new requirements.

To achieve this, new structural, technological and economic solutions are required; openness on the part of industry and the economy is therefore essential. Király Krisztián and his research team are working on the development of such a sustainable, demountable composite structural system.

In cooperation with the university and KÉSZ Group, Király Krisztián is developing a demountable composite floor that follows international sustainability trends while also adapting to the characteristics of the Hungarian construction industry. The first experimental programme for the structural system - consisting of precast reinforced concrete panels connected to steel beams with demountable shear connectors, namely threaded rods - was completed in spring 2023, and its results were presented at the conference.
